Where will you be with your lawn care marketing efforts this time next year? Now is the time to set your goals and write out a landscape business plan. Here are three predictions for the face of lawn care marketing in 2010.

1. Word-of-mouth referrals will continue to be the most cost effective and efficient method of marketing your landscaping business. However, “word of mouth” has changed since the year 2000. Yes, it still includes your client talking to his neighbor, but with the pervasiveness of the internet, the “mouth” has gotten a whole lot bigger. It now includes comments on Google Business Listings and the endless social sites that pop up everyday. Takeaway: Ask your satisfied clients to comment on your business listing (they need a gmail to do so) or bookmark your site at places like Jumptags and Folkd.

2. More and more business will come from search engine return listings. When is the last time you used a phone book to look up a business? For many of us, it has been years. With the lowered cost and competition of smart phones, people surf the web whenever that stray thought hits them, like “I really need to get that big oak tree trimmed.” When they look for “Tree Service Your City”, if you aren’t there you just lost the job to the guy who was. Takeaway: If you don’t have a website, get one. If you do have a website, optimize it for seach.

3. Local search will become more difficult to rank for. I don’t care how small the city or town you live in, your competition is trying to get their website to the top of the search engines right now. Everybody knows that this is where the customers will be from here on out. The competition online is going to get fierce. Takeaway: Learn what links you need and how to get them, or pay someone who does to do it for you. You can learn how here
